Friday Harbor’s Parker Satin and Ryan Cole placed second in doubles at the District 1 tennis tournament Oct. 20 at Coupeville. They will play a pigtail match in May in an attempt to advance to the Quad-District tournament. Hayden Place finished third in singles, qualifying as a Quad-District alternate.
BBC Radio 4 reporter Andrew Luck-Baker spent time with local whale researchers this summer to report on Tucker, a black Labrador trained to help researchers whale scat for study. Tucker is part of an elite team of detection dogs used by scientists studying a number of species, including right whales and killer whales.
Talk of impending pay cuts and unpaid furloughs took their toll at Inter Island Medical Center, staff members told the hospital district commission Wednesday. Closed doors and whispered conversations fed employee fears about whose job was on the line. Doctors called to meetings forgot about their patients. A medical assistant said she overheard a doctor saying that her position was not needed. On more than one occasion, doctors allegedly gave Physician Assistant Pat Davis the wrong direction to meetings she was supposed to attend and told her she couldn’t use certain equipment; employees called the behavior “harassment.”
The San Juan County Public Hospital District Commission meets today — Oct. 20 — at 5 p.m. in the San Juan Island EMS Frank Wilson Building. The meeting is open to the public. On the agenda: Payment of bills and, medical center and EMS operations reports, physician update, an update on Peace Island Medical Center, a resolution adopting the EMS budget for 2011, a resolution setting the EMS property tax levy for 2011, report from board/staff liaisons, and comments from the audience.
Friday Harbor High School’s fall teams are rapidly approaching the District 1 playoff portion of their seasons. The District 1 Tournament is used to determine the seeding of the 1A teams in District 1. There are six 1A teams in District 1 (with the exception of tennis), but they play in three different leagues.
Republican John Koster has pulled out of his only televised debate with Democratic Rep. Rick Larsen in Washington’s 2nd Congressional District race, insisting that a reporter chosen to ask questions is biased against him. SeattleTimes.com has the Associated Press story.
The Wolverines completed their undefeated League season (8-0, 11-3-1 overall) by defeating Orcas 1-0, Tuesday at home. The regular season finishes with a non-league scrimmage featuring varsity and JV squads at La Conner on Oct. 25. The Wolverines’ first playoff game is in Edmonds Oct. 27 against King’s.
The San Juan Historical Museum hosts authors Mike and Julia Vouri on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. for a presentation of the new book “Images of America – San Juan Island.” The museum’s newest book was published by Arcadia Publishing Co. as part of its Images of America series.
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee has endorsed John Koster for Congress in the 2nd District. Koster, a Republican and member of the Snohomish County Council, faces Rep. Rick Larsen, D-Everett, on Nov. 2.
Pelindaba Lavender will open a new store and product gallery in Santa Rosa, Calif.’s Montgomery Village Shopping Center on Oct. 23. The new location follows a brief trial period at the Santa Rosa’s Downtown Market during which the store’s proprietors, Art and Ruth Woolsey, introduced Pelindaba Lavender to the local community.
Graveside service for Nikki Fink is Saturday, Oct. 23, at 3 p.m. at St. Francis Cemetery on San Juan Island. The service will be followed by a celebration of life, 4-6 p.m., at Rumor Mill.
Dr. Bo Turnage, practicing general dentistry in Friday Harbor, has completed a continuing education program in Southern California at Loma Linda University.
The Northwest Workforce Council is recruiting individuals over the age of 55 who are interested in part- or full-time employment. The Senior Community Service Employment Program has available enrollment for seniors with paid training opportunities in San Juan County. Applicants must be over the age of 55, and meet the low-income guideline set by the state. Training is offered through collaboration with local non-profit agencies in all three counties, and participants are paid $8.55 per hour.
