The 2009 season came to an abrupt end for the Friday Harbor tennis team as Coupeville swept the district championships Oct. 21 in Friday Harbor.
Another loss to the starting lineup took its toll as the Wolverines faltered at home in a four-game loss Oct. 20 to Mount Vernon Christian. The Wolverines (2-9 league, 2-12 overall) got a boost with the return of senior Ali Wade and junior Rachel Hay to a starting rotation that’s been snake-bit by injuries and illnesses from the start of the season.
The Friday Harbor Tigers are playoff bound. The Senior Tigers, who finished an eight-game regular-season schedule at 6-2, will face the Arlington Eagles (5-2) in the first-round of the North Cascade Youth Football League playoffs. The top eight teams out of the 10-team league qualify for post-season play.
Wayne Edwin Hagel of Lopez Island died Oct. 18, 2009 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bellingham. He was 76. Wayne was born on Oct. 18, 1933 in Spokane, the son of Ralph and Grace (Faulkes) Hagel. He grew up and lived for most of his life in Spokane. In 1972, he started his own business, Specialty Machining & Manufacturing.
David B. Hoisington peacefully passed away at his home in the morning hours of Oct. 23, 2009. He was 89. He was surrounded by family and with his wonderful loving wife of 69 years, Elizabeth, by his side.
This past July, more than 650 people signed a petition to place the Orcas Island Recreation District Proposal on the ballot. Now is the time to vote to approve the district.
We are not voting whether we should fund the 4-H program “a little less” or a “little more.” If Proposition 1 fails, the 4-H PROGRAM WILL BE ELIMINATED. On behalf of the more than 350 4-H kids in San Juan County, please vote “yes” on Prop. 1.
Deena Barkell, Christen M. Giandomenico, Francis G. Smith and Audrey Wakefield passed their exams administered by the San Juan County Amateur Radio Society at the Friday Harbor Fire Station Oct. 10, earning their technician licenses. They will soon receive their call signs from the Federal Communications Commission, along with licenses good for 10 years.
Friday Harbor Middle School teacher Ben Troutman asked his 15 eighth-graders to each write a five-paragraph essay of no more than 350 words on the topic, “Why People Read.” Here is an essay written by Skyler Moeder.
A large cement tide gate has been removed from the tide channel of Lopez Island’s Shoal Bay lagoon, improving tidal flows and salmon habitat. The tide gate was removed Oct. 15. It had been restricting the flow of water in and out of the lagoon, obstructing fish passage at low tide and causing elevated summertime temperatures within the lagoon.
LaVerne Lamoureux of the U.S. Census Bureau will make a presentation, “A New Portrait of America,” Nov. 5, noon, at Friday Harbor Town Hall and Nov. 10, 2 p.m., in the County Council hearing room.
