The 2009 season came to an abrupt end for the Friday Harbor tennis team as Coupeville swept the district championships Oct. 21 in Friday Harbor.

Heavily-favored in singles and in doubles, the Wolves dominated the district playoffs and claimed all four of the post-season qualifying matches — two in singles and two in doubles, which were up for grabs.

Coupeville’s Connor Tasoff, seeded No. 1 in singles, dispatched Friday Harbor’s Nick Roberts in the opening round, 6-3, 7-6, and then claimed the district singles title by defeating teammate Ben Hayes, 6-3, 7-6, in the championship match.

Hayes advanced to the title bout by netting a 6-1, 6-3 win over the Wolverines’ Zach Milkis in the opening round. Milkis defeated Roberts 6-1, 6-1 to finish third.

In doubles, Coupeville’s Jordan Lamb and Nate Lamb, seeded No. 2, defeated Friday Harbor’s Alex Jangard and Brent Sandifer 6-2, 6-1, en route to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over teammates Travis Curtain and Garret Knoll, the top-seeded team, in the championship match.

Curtain and Knoll advanced to the title match with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Friday Harbor’s Weston Hedin and Parker Satin, and then knocked off Jangard and Sandifer 6-2, 6-2 to claim the district’s runner-up slot in doubles.
