Deena Barkell, Christen M. Giandomenico, Francis G. Smith and Audrey Wakefield passed their exams administered by the San Juan County Amateur Radio Society at the Friday Harbor Fire Station Oct. 10, earning their technician licenses.

They will soon receive their call signs from the Federal Communications Commission, along with licenses good for 10 years.

Technicians have earned the privilege of transmitting on amateur radio on specific frequencies. As they become proficient and pass more exams, they may upgrade to general class and then to extra class with greater privileges.

John Fleischer, KD7BTL, of Eastsound was upgraded from general class to extra class.

The volunteer examiners for this testing session were Dan Drath, Ed Kelm, Charlie Lindenberg, Mike Sear and Jeff Struthers. Dave Vandaveer, treasurer of the San Juan County Amateur Radio Society, acts as liaison to the FCC for the group.

The group of hams includes about 30 active members, who meet each second Friday at 11:30 a.m. at the Friday Harbor Fire Station. The meetings are open to all persons interested in amateur radio.
