Fredrick William Bourland Sr., a Friday Harbor resident and former general manager for Valmark, went home to be with his Lord and Savior following complications from radiation treatment for lung cancer.
He was 73. His life was a testimony of commitment to God, his wife, family and friends.

A petition has been filed seeking endangered species listing for a rare coastal moth found in four coastal areas of British Columbia and six coastal areas of Washington state, including American Camp on San Juan Island. WildEarth Guardians and The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation say the sand verbena moth is “on the edge of extinction” because of habitat changes caused by invasive dune grasses, high recreational use of coastal dunes, and rising sea levels and increased storm surges due to climate change.

Legislation proposed by Sen. Kevin Ranker and unanimously approved by the Senate Wednesday evening would expand the use of neighborhood electronic vehicles (NEVs) for residents of San Juan County. Senate Bill 6346 would allow residents of San Juan County to operate NEVs and medium-speed electronic vehicles on town streets and county roads that are not state routes, provided the road has a speed limit of 45 mph or less. The bill is specific to the San Juan Islands.
San Juan County’s property tax bills will be mailed about two weeks later than usual this year as a result of delays caused by a changeover to a new computer software system.
San Juan County voters overwhelmingly renewed property tax levies supporting schools and emergency medical services Tuesday. With results posted at 8:24 p.m., San Juan Island School District’s maintenance and operations levy was approved 1,869 votes to 841, or 68.97 percent to 31.03 percent. The San Juan Island EMS levy was approved 2,057 votes to 658, or 75.76 percent to 24.24 percent.
