    Maintaining the international sailing was a theme of the speeches given in Sidney. Sidney Mayor Larry Cross, Anacortes Mayor Dean Maxwell and state Sen. Kevin Ranker, D-San Juan Island, all spoke of the ongoing efforts to keep the route going. “As long as I’m in the Legislature, I will continue to fight as hard as I can to protect this run,” Ranker said.

    A 36- or 38-foot boat sank at its moorage at Capron’s Landing late March 29 or early March 30, leaking 35-40 gallons of fuel into the harbor. A-1 Marine/Vessel Assist raised the boat, the Straits Explorer, using inflatable bags and pumps and towed it to North Harbor Marine in Anacortes for storage. No crane was used to raise the boat. A resident of a neighboring vessel awoke March 30 to find the Straits Explorer hanging on to the dock by its starboard mooring lines.

    Two Republican U.S. Senate candidates — one of them a noted former NFL tight end — bring their campaigns to Friday Harbor in April. Clint Didier is the special guest at a no-host lunch upstairs at the China Pearl, April 2 at 11:30 a.m. He played for the Washington Redskins from 1982-87 and for the Green Bay Packers from 1988-89. He was inducted into the Portland State Football Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Central Washington Football Hall of Fame in 2002.

    Friday Harbor junior Nick Roberts scored the first goal of his prep soccer career March 26 in the Wolverines’ 4-1 loss at home to Forks. The Wolverines’ (0-1) schedule has been hampered by game postponements — six so far. The team will get some playing time April 3 when they travel to Forks.

    I have been beachcombing Washington beaches since I was a kid and came across something last week that I have never seen before. I found a strange cylinder-shaped object during low tide. Some other beachcombers and myself poked at it trying to figure out what it was. They decided to take it home and contact the military or police at home. Can you imagine my shock when I looked it up online.
