A contingent of Friday Harbor orca advocates will participate in an international protest May 15 to call for a captive orca’s return to her native Salish Sea. The international protest calls for the Miami Seaquarium to release Lolita, who was captured in Penn Cove 40 years ago. The protest begins at 9:30 a.m. Friday Harbor time. The regional coordinator is Debbi Fincher.

The San Juan County Council today began exploring options for handling trash and recycling on San Juan Island, given the likelihood that a state permit which allows the county to operate the Sutton Road site will expire June 30.

The federal agency in charge of fishery management, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, on Tuesday announced that three types of rockfish in Washington state’s Georgia Basin will be protected under the Endangered Species Act.
Beginning May 1, the majority of Puget Sound and the Strait of Georgia, including Marine Area 7, which encompasses the San Juans, will be restricted to angling for bottomfish at a depth of no greater than 120 feet (20 fathoms). Furthermore, as part of the package of restrictions enacted by the state Fish and Wildlife Commission earlier this year, the daily bag-limit for rockfish, which for the past several years has been just one, will drop to zero (with exception of areas at west end of Juan de Fuca Strait).

Friday Harbor teams took two seconds and a first place finish in the second annual Orcas Island Basketball Tournament, March 13. Maybe it was the lights, but more than likely it was experience, some hard work and a reorganization of the tournament that helped turn things around for a group of 22 fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade Friday Harbor girls.
