National Weather Service sends out public alert of high winds up to 45 mph, gusts of 60 mph

The strongest winds are expected over the San Juan Islands, with gusts to 60 mph near the peak of the event; power outages expected

High wind warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. this evening.

  • Timing: winds will increase on Thursday morning, peaking during the afternoon. Very windy conditions are expected to continue all the way into Friday, but the strongest winds should be on Thursday afternoon and evening.

 

  • Winds: southerly winds 25 to 40 mph with gusts to 60 mph near the peak of the event. The strongest winds are expected over the San Juan Islands and the near-shore portions of Whatcom, Skagit and Island counties.

 

  • Impacts: winds this strong can cause trees and tree branches to fall. Power outages can be expected.

 

A High Wind Warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected or occurring. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.
