Wolverines’ baseball is just warming up

The Wolverines’ boys’ baseball team played their first home game of the season on March 16. The young athletes fought hard against Nooksack Valley but came up short. That, however, was just one game.

Tuesday, March 19, the Wolverines’ took on Coupeville winning 6-2. According to Coach Jon Smith, Jackson Feliz pitched seven innings, gave up zero hits, and struck out 13 batters. While at bat, Feliz had a single and a walk. Cody Anderson hit a double, one RBI, and scored one run. Elliot Samonas hit one single, one walk and scored two runs.

“Ben Baisch saved the no-hitter with a diving play on a line drive at shortstop where he injured his thumb,” Smith said.

Harrison Edge took over at shortstop and had a big clutch single. Channing Kleine had two walks, two stolen bases, one RBI, and the proceeded to score one run. Duncan Bogart had one single, one RBI, and two stolen bases. Will Youngsman hit a double, had one walk, and one RBI. Floyd Holman had one single.

On Friday, March 22, the team played the Orcas Vikings. Tensions were high, but the rain kept everyone cool.

Channing Kleine pitched five innings with six strikeouts. At bat, he had two walks and scored one run.

Floyd Holman pitched one inning and struck out three batters. At bat, he hit one single, one double, and scored one run.

Marcos Soto pitched a great last inning, striking out one batter, Smith said. Elliot Samonas walked twice and scored two runs.

Jackson Feliz hit two singles, had three RBI, and scored one run. Mason Smith had one walk and scored one run.

Anderson was hit by a pitch three times enabling him to walk to first base each incident.Youngman walked twice. Henry Pope came into the game late and had a clutch single and scored a run.

The final score, however, was Orcas 13, Wolverines’ 7. They took on the Concrete Tuesday, March 26, and will be playing Darrington at Darrington on Friday, March 29.

The next home game will be April 13 at noon on the Linde Fields against La Conner.
