Are you looking for an event to fill your Labor Day?

The Sculpture Park’s Performance Art Festival “Sculpted Alive!” is a day of art including dancers, musicians, actors and  poets.

The day kicks off Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. at the Roche Harbor docks with a “Steam Punk” theme Mardi Gras style parade, complete with a float.

“Come dressed in your Bohemian finest, and make a day of it,” said Lina Downes, director of the event.

Follow the parade to the Roche Harbor Sculpture Park to see more than  25 performers showing off their talents from 1:30 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Dance

A “must see” for children and the young at heart is the “music box” stage by “The Resting Dancer” bronze sculpture starting at 2 p.m

Ten-year-old Jolie Loucks and Leslie Lott, a former ballerina with Rocky Mountain Ballet Theatre of Montana, will dance to the music of Vivaldi.

Other dancers including Julie Hagn, Michelle Mazzarrella, and Katherine Dietzman will perform lyrical, modern, tap dances.

There will be Middle Eastern dances by belly dancers Pamela Monin, Amy Lopez and Liz Bateman by “The Wormy Apple” sculpture and “The Dancing Fool” sculpture.

“This is the perfect way to introduce smaller children to art and culture without the constraints of sitting in a theatre,” Downes said.

Poetry

This year’s event has a sub-theme of “the life and poetry of Romantic Era poet John Keats.”

“The Sculpture Park, for me, is the ultimate romantic setting,” Downes said. “And Keats is the ultimate Romantic poet.”

Katherine Dietzman, James Gull and Cynthia Church will portray Keats tragic romance with Fanny Brawne in a movement piece choreographed  to Bach’s cello sonatas.

Throughout the day, actors will recite  Keats’ poetry in the park by the “Blue Heron” sculpture.

Music and art

Local musicians will perform at the park including Kels Boreen Project, Rhiana Franklin, Bob Leytze , Mark Mazzarrella, Todd Cochran and Travis Steckler.

Opa! will play Eastern European gypsy music, so bring your dancing shoes.

There will also be face painting, juggling, bag pipe playing, original poetry recitation by Angela Light, Patti Bair, Gretchen Gubelman and Therese Finn.

Downes said photographers and painters should come to the park and set up their easels and practice their art forms.

Annie Howell-Adams will be painting “plein-aire” in the park.

Entrance into the Sculpture Park is by suggested donation of $5 per person.

“Sculpted Alive!” is a benefit for the Sculpture Park and the San Juan Islands Museum of Art.

“We would like to make this an annual festival that expands,” said Downes.
