“We were looking for a musical with a small cast for all ages and I suggested this…” said director Margaret Hall about San Juan Community Theatre’s spring musical “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.”

The musical, written by Clark Gesner, was performed at the San Juan Community Theatre in 1991, but was re-written in 1999 with the addition of several  songs and another character, Charlie Brown’s sister, Sally.

This is the first time the new version is performed on San Juan Island.

The musical doesn’t have a plot, but rather moves through a series of vignettes that stay true to the comics.

“Charlie Brown is not very good at anything, but he always picks himself up and goes on,” Hall said.

Hall, who has done her homework on the background of this musical. The “Peanuts” comic strip by Charles Shultz started in 1950 when the nation was recovering from World War II and according to Hall, “… in a state of euphoria.”

“Any issues like depression were not discussed,” said Hall. “Charlie Brown expressed what others were feeling.”

Taking the title role in stride is Scott Mapstead, principal of Friday Harbor’s Paideia School, who makes his adult stage debut as Charlie Brown. He hasn’t graced the stage since sixth grade. Mapstead’s resume also includes singing in the shower and at church.

“Everyone is so accomplished [in the cast],” Mapstead said.  “It’s fun to get to be a part of this.”

Other cast members, Nicholas Zervas as Schroeder, Doug Schirmer as Linus, Jim “Shu” Carroll as Snoopy, Amanda Lee Smith as Lucy, and Jill Urbach as Sally, resumes range anywhere from television to Shakespearean projects.

The actors, singing with a full orchestra, get to show off their vocal talents with a challenging list of songs. “The Book Report” and “The Glee Club Rehearsal” involve complex, interwoven harmonies.

“The timing is split-second and the notes must be precise, or the whole song falls apart,” Hall said.

The cast has just a few more days before the show starts later this week.

“It’s for the whole family because we can enjoy the characters we grew up with and the kids get to enjoy the characters they are getting introduced to,” Mapstead said.

“You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown,” is an all ages musical celebrating the everyday man, Charlie Brown and his colorful friends.

“Come to this show to find your inner child,” Hall said.
