Madison Stewart grew up near the Great Barrier Reef and feels quite at home in shark-infested water. In fact, the 20-something Australian treats the ocean’s most feared predator much like family.

But sharks are in decline worldwide and they’re not the kind of cuddly creatures that most people would think about cozying up to or going to combat for. Stewart is different than most.

Watch how Stewart, camera in hand, attempts to shine a new light and give greater understanding about the world of sharks in “Shark Girl,” airing Tuesday, at the Grange Hall in Friday Harbor, at 7 p.m.

The documentary is presented as part of the Friday Harbor Film Festival’s spring film series.
