Roy and Janie Burke of Friday Harbor are excited to announce the engagement of their daughter, Carrie Burke, to Juan Unpingco.
Carrie, 24, was born and raised in Leavenworth, Wash., where she graduated from Cascade High School. Carrie went on to attend Central Washington University, where she met Juan.

As a neighborhood group waited to meet Rep. Rick Larsen Saturday, they recited stories of the tears, laughter and truths of “sweat equity.”
“Sweat equity” was a term thrown around a lot as they waited for Larsen with Carol Maas, administrator of Homes for Islanders, a non-profit organization which has helped islanders build homes with funding from USDA Rural Development.

David Tobon is a member of the National Guard. He found out just a few weeks ago that he’s headed overseas.
“The rumors are we’re going to Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan,” Tobon said. Tobon will be working as an engineer in the 81st Engineering Brigade out of Bellingham.
The work he’s been doing with Homes for Islanders isn’t the only thing that Tobon is going to be missing out on.
At the beginning of the year, he and his wife, Bianca, had their first child, David Tobon Jr.
Gary Pflueger, principal of Salmon Middle School in Salmon, Idaho, is the new principal of Friday Harbor Elementary School.
Superintendent Michael Soltman recommended him to the school board May 28. The school board endorsed the hiring. Pflueger’s first day on the job is July 1.
