British soccer camps returing to Friday Harbor | San Juan Sports Briefs

Challenger Sports British Soccer Camps are coming back to Friday Harbor this summer. All staff are fully qualified soccer coaches who are flown from Britain exclusively to work on these summer camps.

The week-long camp offers exciting sessions for all levels of players.

Half-day camps for novice players will be held July 7-11 and Aug. 18-22. Mini-soccer for children ages 4-5 is also scheduled for the July week. A full-day camp for experienced players will take place during the August camp.

Island Rec is seeking host families for the coaches. Contact Sally Thomsen at Island Rec to volunteer.

Basketball camps June 16-19

Registration is open for Advantage Basketball Camps June 16-17 and again June 18-19 in Friday Harbor.

Advantage Basketball Camps are nationally recognized as a top ball-handling camp teaching youth essential skills of the game. Sports Illustrated selected this organization as being one of the top two camps in the country.

Learn to sail with Island Rec

Opportunities for children 9 and older, including adults, are still open for Island Rec’s basic sailing classes for the week of June 16-20.

Aboard El Toros, participants will learn the basic skills necessary to become a competent sailor. A women’s-only class is scheduled July 11-13. Cost for these classes start at $135. Scholarships for San Juan Island children are available.

Dunkin’ at Sunken June 21

Island Rec’s 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament is June 21 at 9 a.m.

Teams of three players are recommended, but four will be allowed. Games take place on both ends of the court at the same time.

Registration fee is $10 per player; teams that register before June 10 will be provided with a special T-shirt. There must be five teams registered by June 10 or the tournament will be cancelled.
