The San Juan Initiative will present recommendations to improve the protection of more than 400 miles of shoreline in San Juan County to the County Council on Dec. 9.

In February, the Look Good … Feel Better program will have its first workshop in Friday Harbor. More than $120,000 has been awarded to 150 graduating seniors in the last 30 years. Students have used scholarships to further their education in Commercial Art, Graphics, Film, Fashion Design, Jewelry, Photography, Metal Work, Industrial Arts, Textiles, Sculpture, History, Culinary Arts and Education.
As early as September, the first snow falls on the Inupiat village of Shishmaref — on a disappearing sand spit on the Seward Peninsula of Alaska — and on desolate St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea. Lee Brooks of Arctic Raven Gallery plans his travel to that region after the first snow, a time when artists start carving, to search for the Northwest Native art treasures featured in the annual show, aptly titled “First Snow.”

All state-run liquor stores will be closed on Thursday in observation of the Thanksgiving holiday. State-run stores will be open on Friday.

San Juan County will get $106,287 from the state Recreation and Conservation Funding Board, a share in some $12.3 million in grants to 33 counties to improve trails and boating facilities. The San Juan County Public Works Department will use its grant to buy Orcas Landing at the south end of Orcas Island, to provide the public access to the waterfront.
The Garuda & I, a favorite venue for beaders as well as lovers of exotic jewelry and objets d’ art, is for sale. “My husband and I also own and run Naknek Charters and Dive and we have decided that we want to focus more of our efforts on building the diving industry in the San Juan Islands,” owner Peggy Long said in an e-mail.
Council members-elect Lovel Pratt and Richard Fralick have both spent time watching and participating in San Juan County Council meetings as private citizens. Today, they began an intense two-day tour, looking behind the scenes at county facilities and meeting with county department heads and staff.
Salmon recovery efforts throughout Puget Sound will receive a $700,000 boost, thanks to grants awarded by the Puget Sound Partnership. Each of the Sound’s 14 watersheds, including the San Juan Islands, will receive a $50,000 grant — issued as part of the Environmental Protection Agency’s National Estuary Program – to implement salmon recovery efforts.

The fourth annual “Turkey Trot,” a 5K (3.1-mile) run, walk, trot or crawl, will be held on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, at 9 a.m. Registration will take place beginning at 8 a.m. in front of the Best Western Friday Harbor Suites, the location of the start and finish, rain or shine.
