My life was saved by the paramedics and EMTs here on San Juan Island this past February. While I have already thanked them in private, I would like to thank them publicly now.
A recent article in The Journal regarding slug-bait poisoning of pets, and the sighting of a tell-tale green puddle in the Post Office parking lot, combined to remind me that I have long intended to write a warning of the dangers of improperly disposed of anti-freeze fluid.
In response to the story about poor Dini, I am incensed (“Dini’s dilemma,” page 1A, March 11 Journal. This is now the second time that I am writing a letter reminding people to properly secure their animals, whether it be in your vehicle, at your home/neighborhood, or on a walk. It is inexcusable for your animal to be loose or off-leash.
I think the county should sell the Beaverton Valley property to PeaceHealth for the new integrated medical center — Beaverton Valley Hospital. The name even sounds fitting, like it came right out of a television show!
Mary Lou Anaya and Mark Sternitzke of San Juan Island married Feb. 2, 2009 in Mount Vernon, Wash. The couple first met during the construction of the bride’s house and were later reacquainted by mutual friends from the Friday Harbor Sailing Club.
Under county law, dog owners are required to have their pets on a leash or otherwise under control. A dog that bites another animal or a person can be labeled a “dangerous dog” by the Sheriff’s Department; subsequent bites can lead to an order that the dog be euthanized. Four Friday Harbor Wolverines were named to 2008-09 Northwest 1A/2B Boys and Girls All-League basketball teams. Four others received honorable mentions. The selections were announced Thursday. Austin Scheffer, a senior guard, was named to the boys All-League first team.
