Most years, the Town of Friday Harbor’s utility payment assistance program gets only a few requests and money in the fund is carried over to the next year. Not in 2009. The fund was exhausted by July 2, with 11 households representing 23 individuals asking for help paying their water bills. That’s up from five households in all of 2008, according to Joyce Sobel of the Family Resource Center, which administers the program for the town.
Jonathan Trigueiro of Friday Harbor married Kelsey Mead of Mukliteo on July 12, 2009 at the home of the bride’s parents, Timothy and Allison Mead in Mukilteo. Jonathan graduated from Friday Harbor High School in 1996 where he was ASB president. He is the nephew of Sandra Hawley and Bob Tauscher, “Uncle Bob.”
The San Juan Island Community Foundation will award more than $50,000 in grants to local non-profits Wednesday, 5:30-7 p.m. in a ceremony at the San Juan Community Theatre. The event is open to the public. The funds will be used to support basic-food distribution, healthcare and children’s services. A portion of the funds will be dedicated to improving the capacity of our existing community organizations that are faced with rapidly growing requests for services.

Donovan and Betty Jane Craddock of Cape San Juan celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary July 18. The Craddocks are natives of Pueblo, Colo., and met in high school there. They were married July 18, 1944 in Pearl Island Chapel, Langley Field, Va.; three weeks later, Don piloted a B-17 to England and later flew 35 missions over Germany.
It’s soon the final curtain for San Juan Community Theatre’s longest-running play, “The Life & Times of General George Pickett.” Island historian Mike Vouri is closing the last chapter of his 14-year one-man drama tonight at 8 on the Whittier stage. Vouri said he’s grown out of the part (Vouri’s 61, and Pickett died when he was 50) and it’s time to move on to another history project.
San Juan Golf and Country Club Women’s Association is sponsoring a four-day women’s golf clinic July 20-23. The clinic is open to members, non-members and newcomers to the game. Golf Pro Darren Black will lead the clinic; the fee is $10 each day.
Michael Hoeller, 12, and Me’tairie Kilpatrick-Boe, 14, were recently presented with their first-degree black belts by their instructor, Senior Master Michael Rennick. The two students had tested for their belts in March, and thus were surprised and thrilled when they received their belts in class on June 1.
