Friday Harbor alumni baseball game Aug. 1

This year’s clash of Wolverines from seasons past is more than just a chance for former ball players to swat a clutch hit, snag a hot grounder or make a diving catch on a hot line drive (there will no doubt be a lot of that going on).

Get ready for a blast from the past as the Boys of Summer take the field at the second annual Wolverines alumni baseball game.

Sponsored by the Friday Harbor Booster Club, the game gets under way at Hartman Field, at noon, Aug. 1.

This year’s clash of Wolverines from seasons past is more than just a chance for former ball players to swat a clutch hit, snag a hot grounder or make a diving catch on a hot line drive (there will no doubt be a lot of that going on).

It’s a fund-raiser, with the proceeds going to help pay for the cost of maintaining Hartman Field. There will be barbecued burgers and hot dogs, beverages, a bake sale, and a silent auction featuring an assortment of local goods and services.

The booster club raised roughly $2,500 last year.

In last year’s contest, the young guns pulled off a one-run win in the bottom of the ninth thanks to cagey strategy on the base paths.

Former Wolverine ball players John Cornell, Shawn Kleine and Justin Nibler are among the alums slated to take the field on Aug. 1.

“It’s a great way for the community to get together and take a trip down memory lane at the baseball field for a couple of hours,” said Kim Warin, wife of long-time Friday Harbor baseball coach Rich Warin.
