Two candidates for office on San Juan Island may want to change the e-mail addresses they are using in relation to their campaigns. On the contact information they provided for the county voters pamphlet, Town Council candidate Noel Monin listed his e-mail address at San Juan Island Fire Department; Port Commission candidate Greg Hertel listed his e-mail address at the port district. Monin is a captain and maintenance supervisor at the fire department. Hertel is a port commissioner.
The U.S. Coast Guard rescued two people from a grounded 30-foot recreational boat in the northern San Juan Islands, late Tuesday. At about 11 p.m. the Coast Guard Cutter Sea Lion, an 87-foot patrol boat homeported in Bellingham, was near Sucia Island State Park when the crew came across the 30-foot wooden boat, Gypsy, grounded on some rocks.
A house in the San Juans for less than $400,000? How about a house for less than $300,000? Or a quarter-acre town lot at around $100,000, a half-acre lot for $120,000, or a five-acre parcel for $175,000? Real estate prices have dropped, and the market is starting to chug along.
Friends, here I am at a serious crossroad! Today is one year since my life was change (not stopped), thank God. Today is also officially my retirement from VanderYacht Propane. I have never been without a job since 1962, so it does hit me as an adjustment. They gave me a wonderful opportunity to challenge my abilities and convictions, but I must finally admit that they deserve a full-bodied person and I will focus on self-advancement of getting back to normal. I’m not giving up, just shifting gears.

State Rep. Dave Quall, D-Mount Vernon, was gaveled at the Washington Association of School Administrators summer conference in July, but unlike being gaveled on the floor of the House, this was something to celebrate.
First, the good news: Friday Harbor merchants and innkeepers are doing better. Now, the tough news: They are doing better than 2004. The latest sales and hotel-motel tax figures from the Town of Friday Harbor shows receipts lagging behind 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. In only one month, April, did we almost do as well as last year.
Orca Relief would better serve the orca if they would stop splitting hairs over what you perceive as a loophole in the whale-watching rules and stop distracting the public from the real issues these whales are facing that may cause their demise: salmon depletion and pollution of their environment.
When tragedies happen in our island communities, anger, grief and shock can pull us together or pull us apart. Sometimes it’s a little of both.
I re-read “Atlas Shrugged” recently and was dumbfounded that a book written in the ’50s was so eerily current; almost a prophesy of where our nation is headed if we stand by and continue to be star struck with this amazingly charismatic politician.
