I was overjoyed to read that the final state budget includes funding
toward the purchase of the historic Friday Harbor Brick & Tile Co. on Nichols Street for a permanent farmers’ market facility and — equally
important, in my opinion — the upgrading of a dreary part of
downtown. In just a few years, I’m sure no one will believe we didn’t
always have this vibrant, busy community center.
The San Juan Dragons are 4-1 and on top of the Skagit Conference after defeating Woodinville 9-4 April 14, at Woodinville. San Juan played aggressively, scoring three goals and holding Woodinville scoreless in the first quarter. San Juan scored two more goals in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth. Woodinville scored one goal in the third quarter, and managed three more goals in the fourth.
The Lions Mobile Health Screening Unit visits Friday Harbor April 19-20, offering 30 minutes of free health tests to islanders. The Mobile Health Screening Unit will be at Mullis Community Senior Center April 19, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Friday Harbor MarketPlace on April 20, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Tom Pasma visits San Juan Island April 24 as part of a weeklong series of events to promote his candidacy to succeed Dave Quall in the state House of Representatives. “It’s important for such a geographically diverse district for people to know that you won’t just represent where you are from, that you will represent the entire district,” said Pasma, a Bow rancher and former chairman of the 40th Legislative District Democrats.
On April 3, Ming Zhang and Natalia Borges exchanged wedding vows in the presence of
family and close friends. The ceremony was held in a penthouse suite atop the Westin
Seattle. Ming is a Friday Harbor High School (2004) and Washington State University (2008) graduate. His bride, Naty, is also a 2008 graduate of Washington State University, where they met. The new couple will make their home in Seattle, where Ming is an agent for American Family Insurance.
Two Republican U.S. Senate candidates — one of them a noted former NFL tight end — bring their campaigns to Friday Harbor this month. Sean Salazar is the special guest at a no-host lunch upstairs at the China Pearl April 20, and on Orcas Island the same day from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Clint Didier is the special guest at a no-host lunch upstairs at the China Pearl, April 23 at 11:30 a.m.
Eleven islanders were elected delegates or alternate delegates to the state Republican Convention June 10-12 in Vancouver. They were elected at the San Juan County Republican Convention, March 28.
At least 20 islanders, referring to themselves as Tea Party supporters, gathered during the noon hour in front of the county courthouse Thursday to protest what they called an “assault on the average taxpayer” by government.
Ken “Dart” Malan, 78, retired Group Health physician, died from cancer on April 5, 2010 at Evergreen Hospice in Kirkland, Wash. He was born Aug. 21, 1931 in Ogden, Utah, son of Kennett H. Malan and Maureen Peck. He spent some of his happiest days working with his beloved grandpa, Gideon H. Malan, on their mountain, and with his lifelong friends from Polk Elementary, fondly referred to as “the sons of Polk.” He was on winning swimming and skiing teams at Ogden High School.
Robert “Bob” Sheldon Dixon passed peacefully on April 12, 2010 at St. Joseph’s Hospital after complications from a cardiac arrest. Bob was born in Seattle, Wash., on March 2, 1954. He graduated from Lake Washington High School in 1972. Bob moved to Friday Harbor in 1977. Bob was a skilled meat cutter for more than 30 years in Friday Harbor, employed by Verne Howard.
State Attorney General Rob McKenna will talk about “Protecting Private Property Rights” at the May 4 meeting of CAPR San Juan — the Citizens Alliance for Property Rights, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the San Juan Island Grange. Minnie Knych said McKenna may also talk about the proposed San Juan Islands National Monument designation and the possible implications. Land owned by the U.S. Department of Natural Resources — some 900 acres — is on a U.S. Interior Department list of proposed national monuments.
It’s now been four years since the grassroots group that named itself the San Juan Island Anti-Litter Initiative formed. During this time, we’ve mounted several important campaigns aimed at raising awareness about San Juan Island’s litter problem and at attempting to reduce the amount of litter on our roadsides and beaches. Working behind the scenes in concert with us was Patt Martin, a woman who deserves a very special “thank you” from all of us.
“Cowboy” Bob Myhr recently sent out a press release regarding an Audubon field trip on Lopez. He called it a trip sponsored by the Lopez subchapter of the San Juan Islands Audubon Society. We do not have subchapters as all the San Juan Islands are part of San Juan Islands Audubon Society.
