For a few hours on Saturday, May 22, the clouds parted and the sun was shining on the Friday Harbor Elementary School playground just in time for students, their families and many in our community to enjoy the booths, food, huge inflatables and excitement of the PTA’s Spring Carnival. The crowd was large, the smiles were plenty, prizes were abundant and a wonderful time was had by all.
Retired educator Laura Jo Severson has announced her candidacy for San Juan County Council District 2 (San Juan North). She is one of two candidates running for the position so far; the other is Rich Peterson, who is seeking reelection. The primary election is Aug. 17, the general election is Nov. 2. The top two vote-getters in the primary advance to the general election. Candidates began mailing in their formal candidacy documents May 21; in-person filing is June 7-11.
The Bureau of Land Management is hosting a public meeting June 5, noon to 4 p.m., at Mullis Community Senior Center regarding revisions to its Resource Management Plan in Washington state, including the San Juan Islands. The new plan will provide management direction for the next two decades for about 445,000 acres of BLM-administered public lands in Eastern Washington and in the San Juan Archipelago.

Springtide, the annual visitors guide published by The Journal of the San Juan Islands and The Islands’ Sounder, will be on the streets this week. The National Park Service guide is included in the May 26 Journal of the San Juan Islands.
A San Juan Island man died Saturday after his Humvee H3 went off the road on his property at 902 Miller Road and rolled onto its passenger side. Sheriff’s investigators believe Michael Russell Thor, 52, died of head and neck injuries when he fell climbing out of the vehicle. His body was found outside the vehicle by a friend who went to the property to visit him, the Sheriff’s Department reported.
The San Juan Dragons reached new heights in their history Saturday, defeating Roosevelt 7-2 to advance to the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association Division II semifinals for the first time ever. In addition, five Dragons have been named to the All-Skagit Conference team: Senior midfielder Michael Ausilio, senior midfielder Forest Dayton, senior attackman Ryan Guard, senior goalie Calen Mehrer, and senior defender Brady Sundberg.
The Whale Museum’s fourth annual “Celebration of the Orca Greeting Ceremony” fund-raising dinner and auction is May 22, 6 p.m., in Mullis Community Senior Center in Friday Harbor. An audio-visual program will be shared by Val Veirs of an actual orca greeting ceremony. Veirs will play acoustic recordings and show photos and video of this amazing event.
The San Juan County Citizens’ Salary Commission voted Thursday to reduce the sheriff’s salary by more than $10,000 and increase the salary for the county prosecutor by $5,000 per year. The commission responded to studies analyzing cost-of-living figures and comparative salaries for elected officials around the state. The study showed that the county sheriff’s $97,520 compensation is in the mid-range among Washington counties, but relatively high among counties with similar populations. The study also noted that the sheriff’s salary, which is has been set at 2 percent above the undersheriff’s salary, is 16 percent higher than the highest-paid sergeant.
The fifth annual Flare Shoot is May 22, 1 p.m., at Jackson’s Beach. It’s a family event presented by the Friday Harbor Power Squadron in conjunction with the Friday Harbor Fire Department and West Marine, as a public service for Safe Boating Week. The San Juan Island Fire Department will also be participating.
The Sears Family is thrilled to announce two new additions to their families: cousins Scott and Tiffany. Scott Henry Sears was born April 28, 2010 to Dennis and Dori Sears. He joined his older brother John, who is 2 1/2. The very next day, Scott’s cousin arrived. Tiffany Rose Sears was born April 29, 2010 to Jerry and Kate Sears. Her older brother, James, will be 3 in July.
Anacortes School Board President Kris Lytton has been endorsed by the National Women’s Political Caucus of Washington in her bid for the 40th District state House seat being vacated by Dave Quall, who is retiring. Lytton is a Democrat. Other candidates are Democrat Thomas Boucher, a member of Congressman Rick Larsen’s district staff; Republican Dusty Gulleson, a Bellingham businessman; Republican Mike Newman, a real estate agent and Skagit County Republican Party precinct committee officer; Democrat Tom Pasma, a Bow rancher and nominee of the 40th Legislative District Democrats.
