Former Friday Harbor resident John Paul Cook died May 14, 2010, in Rathdrum, Idaho. He was born in Stockton, Calif., in 1923. He moved to Juneau in 1957 from Bend, Ore., to work as a printer with The Juneau Empire, with his family initially living above the Empire facilities, then located at Main and Front streets. I am a 9-1-1 dispatcher and, therefore, a member of the Sheriff’s Office. I am also a citizen of San Juan County. I have as much at stake in the leadership of our Sheriff’s Department as anyone else. I also have a unique perspective from within that office.

Barbara Starr showed good political judgment before she was appointed to the Friday Harbor Town Council. She said she didn’t want to have the “audacity or arrogance” to reschedule a client’s appointment in case the council appointed her to complete Carrie Brooks’ term. As a result, she’ll be 30 minutes late to her first council meeting Thursday evening.
On July 10, at about midday, a plane buzzed the waters where the whales were swimming. It was near the lighthouse in Lime Kiln Point State Park. It was not only much too close to the whales but also a danger to boaters and those on shore. Luckily, some people who were also there managed to get photographs of the plane, good enough to capture the ID number on the side.
I enthusiastically support Larry Kalb, Democrat, for U.S. Congress in Washington’s 2nd District. Many candidates declare their promises of change and hope, but few are willing to make it so. I believe Larry has the leadership ability and the constituent support to bring about the needed change.

And in some cases, the privilege of representing you will come with compensation and full health benefits – better than many of their potential constituents receive. “They” are the candidates for office in the Aug. 17 primary election.
