Bud passed away peacefully July 2 from complications of dementia in Friday Harbor’s October House. His long-time love and companions, Betty Halliday and dog Buddy, were at his side.

Bud was born in Hastings, Minn., May 24, 1926. He spent the majority of his life in North Seattle and on San Juan Island. He and Betty spent many summers building their home on Neil Bay. They had many enjoyable times with family and friends there. They also enjoyed spending winters RVing and, more recently, in their home in Palm Desert, Calif.

Bud was a self-taught man. He was an inventor and holds several patents. He was an innovator in the steam carpet industry. His ability to take the heat and water for steam carpet cleaning from the engine via a heat exchanger was a major safety improvement over heating the water with propane in the truck-mounted units.

He also enjoyed prospecting and refining of gold and silver. Bud was a great conversationalist and was very knowledgeable and interested in a wide variety of subjects.

He proudly served in the Army during World War II.

Bud is survived by his five biological children, Betty’s three daughters, and numerous grand- and great-grandchildren in Alaska, Oregon and Washington.
