Jim Lawson caught a 32.10-pound king in the Einar Nielsen Becky Barr Fishing Classic, outdistancing the competition to win the tournament and its first prize of $5,000. The 26th annual classic was Sept. 23-26 at Roche Harbor. All proceeds from the classic supports scholarships for graduating high school seniors. In June, the classic awarded about $15,000 in scholarships.
Ron Bates won the San Juan Golf and Country Club club championship, in competition that ended Sept. 12. It’s Bates’ second club championship; he won in 2006. Bates defeated Thane Bolger, Steve Duzan and Jim Schuman for this year’s title.
Minor Reinforcement, a new, local non-profit, and Vic’s Drive-In are working together to provide a safe place for students to meet up with friends, hang out, and eat after the two remaining home football games.
Since 2006, the Friday Harbor Wolverines girls soccer team has taken as its cause increasing awareness and raising funds for breast cancer education, research and support for those who are ill. October 2010’s activities have included the continued sale of “Kicks Against Breast Cancer” pins, and of pink ribbons and baked goods. The team’s kickoff to the month was a mini-camp for island youth soccer players Oct. 2, led by members of the team.
Does your organization participate in fundraising? Do your board members and volunteers have the skills they need to be successful in finding the funds needed to support the work of the organization? Or do you and they shrink from direct contact with potential donors? Perhaps you need to rethink your fundraising plan as well as its process.
Come January 2011, the only transfer station in the San Juans could be on Orcas Island. That cannot be the only solution to county’s Solid Waste Division’s financial woes. The $5 recycling fee is one step (it will raise some $240,000 in 15 months, offsetting some $300,000 in annual recycling expenses). Working with Friday Harbor to get the town back into the system is another (the town paid $662,584 into the system in 2008-09).
Holiday cards are an important way for people to keep in touch with family and friends. But for people who must move to assisted living homes, that tradition often falls to the wayside. Holiday photos aren’t taken. The process of buying cards, writing greetings, addressing envelopes and mailing is a chore. Michael Martin, a professional photographer living in Friday Harbor, remembers when his grandfather stopped sending holiday cards after he moved to assisted living. With that memory in mind, and with the holiday season rapidly approaching, Martin came up with an idea.
San Juan County recently completed a series of “workshops” concerning proposed revisions to the Critical Areas Ordinance (CAO). From the beginning of the update process, Common Sense Alliance has highlighted several of the issues the County Council must address before crafting new regulations.
Oct. 10 starts the 10th year of the United States attack on Afghanistan. Nine years of death, injuries, destruction, tragedy and horror in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan. The time is long past for we citizens to heed the lyrics of the song, “Waist Deep In The Big Muddy,” by Pete Seeger.
The issues surrounding my vote against the purchase of the conservation and historic preservation easement on the Erickson Building seem to be remaining controversial and divisive on San Juan Island, even though this action was taken over a month ago. This letter is an effort to set out my reasoning and, ideally, provide information that may help to avoid further problems of this kind.
As our Nov. 2 election is approaching us, please carefully research our candidates for sheriff. I would like to support Rob Nou as our next county sheriff, and encourage you to do the same.
As a career manager, I recognize the importance of careful fact-finding and analysis, but I also know that successful action requires respect for the input of the team and a willingness to move forward. Not every member of the council seems to have this characteristic and we are all paying the price. I have therefore decided to vote for Laura Jo Severson for District 2 San Juan County Council, at least in part, because I feel she has the intelligence and mettle to move us off the dime and make the hard decisions.
Please leave campaign signs alone. Although I have chosen to not use them, I do not want to interfere with other candidates’ right to them a part of their campaign. This morning, a friend told me that that a number of my opponent’s yard signs have been taken down. There is no one I know in my campaign who would do such a thing, and I would deplore anyone doing so.
