Newly installed path connects San Juan Historical Museum outdoor exhibits

Just in time for the annual Pig War Picnic, a team of volunteers and San Juan Island Historical Museum staff and board members put the finishing touches on the museum’s ‘paver path’, Saturday.

Known prospectively as the “Cahail Trail”, in honor of the late Jim Cahail, a former Historical Society volunteer and Friday Harbor mayor, the paver path spans roughly 355 linear feet and connects the King House, the museum’s centerpiece, to the Scribner cabin, and meanders in, out and around the other buildings and exhibits on the museum grounds, including the barn and the historic county jail.

The paver-path project began as a Friday Harbor High School student community service project, and gathered momentum along the way from various in-kind contributions, labor, materials and equipment, and an assortment of donations, including $2,700 as a tribute to Jim Cahail.

Although the path’s completion took a little more time than expected, museum director Kevin Loftus noted that the project “came in under budget”.
