Prepared? free self-defense workshop

In observance of Sexual Assault Awareness month, the month of April, San Juan County Domestic Violence Sexual Assault Services is offering a free self-defense and self-protectioin workshop for women ages 16 years and up.
Led by certified instructors Leslie Brennan, Arian Drake-Raue and Sgt. Scott Brennan of San Juan County Sheriff’s Department, the five-hour workshop is Sunday, April 14, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Frank Wilson Memorial EMS Building, on Spring Street, in Friday Harbor. (girls ages 13-15 may participate if accompanied by a parent). In a nationwide survey (CDC&P, Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 2011), 9.4 percent of high school students report being hit, slapped or physically hurt on purpose by a boyfriend or girlfriend in the 12 months prior to answering the survey.
