The Wolverines will face an uphill battle in their head-to-head match up with Coupeville for regional bragging rights.

The Wolves slipped past Friday Harbor 3-2 in team play April 16 on their home court to net the first of three regular-season match ups between the 1A rivals.

With the match knotted 2-2, Coupeville freshmen Amanda d’Almeida and Jessica Riddle prevailed 7-6, 6-3 over Friday Harbor’s Fabiola Bell and Sierra Dawson in No. 3 doubles to put the home team over the top with a 3-2 victory.

The teams will square off two more times in regular-season play — once on Friday Harbor’s home court (an April 26 match has been postponed and yet to be rescheduled) and on May 3 in Coupeville.

Coupeville’s Julia Sierra Castano, who has yet to drop a set this season, defeated Friday Harbor sophomore Rebecca Leff 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles contest to give the Wolves an early edge. Friday Harbor senior Emma Ytander notched a win for Friday Harbor with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Coupeville’s Marie Hesselgrave in No. 2 singles.

Jordan Akins and Jessica Blanchette put the Wolves back in front by hanging a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 defeat on Hannah Snow and Jenny Dunn in No. 1 doubles. Alex MacDonald and Shanti Neff-Baro evened the match with a dominating 6-3, 6-1 victory in No. 2 doubles and to set up the pivotal showdown in No. 3 doubles.
