The Wolverines made quick work out of Concrete and swept a doubleheader on the road April 10 by a combined total of 35-4.

More importantly, perhaps, senior Kerri Goff had her groove on from the very first pitch.

“She pitched the first three innings of both games without giving up a walk. That’s zero base-on-balls,” Head Coach Kevin Carlton said. “And she threw hard.”

The Wolverines jumped out in front and were never tested by an inexperienced Concrete squad in either game. They needed just five innings to clinch the first game by a score of 16-2, and then another five to seal the second by a score of 19-2. All 19 players contributed to the cause.

Still, it was a laser-like performance on the mound by Goff that pleased Carlton the most. The Wolverines have been forced to play catch up in each of their four losses in large part because of the senior’s difficulty in finding the strike zone in the early innings.

It’s difficult, Carlton said, for the team to capitalize on perhaps its greatest asset — speed on the base paths — when it plays from behind.

“It takes us out of our game and the things we like to do on the base paths,” he said. “It’s hard to gamble and take chances when your playing from behind.”

The timing couldn’t be better if Goff is truly back in the zone. The Wolverines (3-2 league, 6-4 overall) have a pivotal four-game stretch this week, which began April 13 at home in a rematch with La Conner. (The Wolverines lost 4-3.)

After hosting the Braves, they face Meridian on the road April 14 in a regional contest with post-season implications, and then tackle league-leading Orcas at home April 17 in a doubleheader that could bear heavily on the Northwest 1A/2B League title chase. Game time is 12:30 p.m.

Errors, walks and an early four-run deficit took their toll as the Wolverines dropped both games of a league doubleheader April 6 at La Conner.

The Braves made the most out of a slow and erratic start by Friday Harbor, as well as an early 4-0 lead in both games, to claim back-to-back wins at home by scores of 7-4 and 8-4.

“We just didn’t get it done,” Head Coach Kevin Carlton said. “When you spot a good team like that four runs, it’s difficult. It take us out of what we do, which is run the bases.”
