Friday Harbor’s Roy Taylor sent his slugging percentage through the roof.
The junior infielder had a home run, a double and six RBIs in the Wolverines’ 13-0 five-inning defeat of Concrete in Game 1 of a doubleheader on the road, April 10.
Friday Harbor had a fight on its hands, however, in the nightcap.
The Wolverines turned a closely contested game into a 17-3 rout by capitalizing on a pair of walks and a base hit, ultimately scoring nine runs in the top of the seventh. Junior Tanner Buck earned the win on the mound after holding the Lions scoreless in their final at-bat.
“They’re young but they’ve got good pitching,” Head Coach Rich Warin said of the Lions. “The games were better than what the final score shows. But we’re definitely playing better and playing up to our potential.”
With the sweep, the Wolverines improved to 4-1 in Northwest 1A/2B League play and to 6-4 overall.
In the opener, junior Shawn Cutting earned the win with a five-inning shutout. At the plate, senior Parker Lawson drove in three runs and had two base hits, Sasha Moghadam had a pair of base hits, Alex Jangard was 2-of-2 and Buck drove in two runs to add fuel to Taylor’s fireworks.
The Wolverines outscored Concrete by a combined total 30-3 over two games.

The Wolverines exploded for five runs in their final at-bat to clinch a 9-4 victory in the opening game of a league doubleheader April 6 at La Conner.
The Braves rallied in the nightcap, however, and returned the favor by turning two free-passes to first base — a walk and a hit batter — and a pair of singles into a 3-2 win in their final at-bat. The loss marred a solid performance on the mound by junior Roy Taylor, who gave up four base hits and only two earned runs over seven innings. He struck out four and walked three.
“We just didn’t hit in the second game,” Head Coach Rich Warin said.
In the opener, the Wolverines tied the score 4-4 with a run in the sixth inning and then iced the win with a five-run outburst in the seventh. Junior Alex Jangard, who earned the win after replacing Shawn Cutting on the mound in the fifth inning, had a pair of base hits and drove in three runs. Seniors Parker Lawson and Justin “J.J.” James each had three base-hits.

The Wolverines travel to Granite Falls April 15. They host Orcas in a doubleheader April 17; game time is 12:30 p.m. at Hartman Field.
