The Friday Harbor Wolverines soccer team is maturing.

The mostly rookie team, outscored by a total of 40-1 in its first three games of the season, allowed Nooksack Valley only two goals in a 2-0 loss at home Monday.

This is a team that has only two seniors and one reliever.

Junior striker Diante Scott was moved to goalie and helped the Wolverines hold Nooksack to 0-0 at halftime. Nooksack Valley had 14 shots on goal, Friday Harbor 3.

“He stopped some shots and gave (the Wolverines) a chance to hold the ball longer,” Assistant Coach Ron Duke said of Scott. “They are getting some experience. They’re not in the least bit discouraged and I haven’t heard any complaints. I’m quite proud of their attitude.”

Nooksack Valley evened its record to 4-4.

The Wolverines (1-6) next face Washington High School at Franklin Pierce Stadium Friday at 6 p.m. They travel to Cavelero April 21, 3:30 p.m. They host Lynden Christian April 25 and close out the regular season April 28, 3:30 p.m., at Cavelero.

The Wolverines will play in the first round of District playoffs May 5.
