Race of the month? ‘Runners World’ picks San Juan Island marathon

Several changes are in store for the 2014 marathon, Sunday, June 22: a new course, still with plenty of hills, and start and finish lines at Lakedale Resort, a first-time host of the event. The Marathon and the Three Lakes Triathlon will both take place June 22, for the first time as well.

The San Juan Island Marathon, half-marathon and 10K run gained nationwide exposure on the eve of its 12th year as the island’s premier long-distance road race and, for many, fun run.

The event, sponsored by Kings Market, is the featured “Race of the Month” for June in the most recent edition of Runners World Magazine, a nationally distributed publication with a circulation of 716,857.

“With the forward thinking partnership mentality of Lakedale’s owners and general manager Karl Bruno, we’ve been able to cooperatively put this weekend together,” said Paul Hopkins, owner of Island Athletic Events and marathon co-founder.
