Golfers Jack Hess and Akira Tokunaka head to State

By Coach Jack Rice

The Wolverine Golf team attended the BiDistrict Tournament May 5 at the Battle Creek Golf Club. Jack Hess had no problem punching his ticket for a return trip to the HS golf state tournament. He finished in 8th place with a solid 88. Fisher Goosman ended up in a tie for the coveted 17 spot which put him in a sudden-death playoff against Kellen Weedon from Sound Christian. Both players hit good drives on the tight par 4 first hole. Fisher pulled his second shot into the trap while Kellen knocked it on the green to within 15 feet. Fisher hit a good sand shot but it ran just outside Kellen’s ball. Putting first, Fisher drained the 16-footer for par and put all the pressure on his opponent. Kellen stepped up and drained the birdie putt to win the playoff. Fisher will be first alternate incase someone is unable to play next week in the state tournament. On so close was Freshman Sam Hurda and Senior Ryan Rautenberg who missed the qualifier by only a couple of shots.

Freshman Akira Tokunaka cruised to a 5th-place finish in the qualifier for the state tournament. She had a little trouble on the front nine but pulled it all together to win one of the coveted 14 qualifying spots. Morgan Douglass didn’t have such an easy path to win her ticket to the state tournament. Morgan ended up in a three-way playoff to see who would qualify. Morgan and Talynn both hit the green in regulation while Alyssa pulled her shot left of the green. Alyssa was in a difficult position and wasn’t able to get her ball on the green. Morgan and Talynn won the playoff to secure their trip to the state tournament.

The state tournament occurs May 21-22 at Tumwater Valley Golf Club.
