The fastpitch team at Friday Harbor High School traveled to Yakima to compete in the 1B/2B State Championships on May 26 through 27 for the third year in a row. The girls placed in the top eight of the state.
The Wolverines played a total of four games in two days, they won two and lost two. On Friday, May 26, they played and beat Mary Walker 12-0, then played the No. 1 team in the division Pe Ell Willapa Valley and lost 4-1.
On Saturday, May 27 the girls first played Asotin and won 13-3. Their second game was against De Salles, and the Wolverines lost that game 7-2, which ended their chances of advancing any further.
Friday Harbor’s first game against Mary Walker was a shutout 12-0. This author, senior Emma Wickman ended the game with a three-run walk-off homerun. The Wolverines then advanced in the winners’ bracket, and got to play a tough team under the lights of the complex. They played Pe Ell Willapa Valley, who later went on to win the first place title in a game in which they won 10-1. The girls held the No. 1 team to just four runs. In that game, junior Savannah Hoffman had a single and a triple, and sophomore Ava Hoffman had a sacrifice bunt to move a runner into scoring position. Since the girls lost that game, they were moved to the lower bracket and were then playing for third place. The next day, the Wolverines played Asotin, and beat them 13-3. Senior Hannah Hopkins had two base hits, and sophomore Thea Seitz had one base hit. Right after that game, the Wolverines faced off against De Salles and came up short due to one inning, losing 7-2. Ava Hoffman had two more sacrifice bunts in this game, and Wickman had six strikeouts, 15 total for the whole tournament. This ended the Wolverines season.
