Island Senior: Mullis Center to host Open House

By Peggy Sue McRae, Journal contributor

If you are a senior, future senior, or curious islander, the Mullis Center will be hosting an Open House on Thursday, Oct. 19 from 4-6 p.m. Light refreshments and snacks will be served and Mullis Center staff and board members will be present to answer questions and hear suggestions.

The Mullis Board has had a busy time working hard this past year to transition the center from being part of the previous three-island structure into becoming an independent non-profit. We all look forward to beginning this new chapter of serving our island community. Come and help celebrate a job well done!

Featured will be a variety of the current programs, activities and services the Mullis Center provides plus a few projects still in the pipeline. In the new and exciting category, the Mullis Center now has 2 new Ping Pong tables! The tables join a wide variety of games, clubs, and activities our members enjoy.

Also among our fitness options 2 new classes are being offered this fall, Marital Arts and Movement Kata, plus Yoga for Longevity. These will join our other ongoing fitness classes. Senior Nutrition including Monday and Wednesday lunches as well as our ever-more-in-demand Meals on Wheels program plus our Footcare program remain our most vital and relied upon services. Our Mobility Equipment Lending Program is also consistently popular.

Something new to be launched in the fall will be the Caregiver Connections website, a local resource to be available when your family needs caregivers.

Said Patty Brightman, “As President of the Mullis Community Senior Center Board, I am looking forward to the open house and meeting our supporters in the community. I also look forward to hearing how we can better serve the seniors and disabled population of the island.”

As the Mullis Center continues to grow and adapt to serving an ever-growing population of seniors and disabled adults your opinions and requests help to steer us in the direction of best meeting the needs of islanders. Please stop by on Oct. 19 for a snack and a chat. We would love to see you.
