Wayne Edwin Hagel of Lopez Island died Oct. 18, 2009 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bellingham. He was 76. Wayne was born on Oct. 18, 1933 in Spokane, the son of Ralph and Grace (Faulkes) Hagel. He grew up and lived for most of his life in Spokane. In 1972, he started his own business, Specialty Machining & Manufacturing.
David B. Hoisington peacefully passed away at his home in the morning hours of Oct. 23, 2009. He was 89. He was surrounded by family and with his wonderful loving wife of 69 years, Elizabeth, by his side.
He designed and/or built more than 150 boats in his tenure at the yard while at the same time serving his community in capacities such as: first Friday Harbor Port Commission, 1950-1973; Friday Harbor Town Council, 1953-1959; OPALCO board, 1965-69 and 1975-2008; and as a school board member, a volunteer firefighter, member of the Friday Harbor Presbyterian Church, charter member of the San Juan Island Yacht Club, and member of the San Juan Masonic Lodge for more than 60 years.
Marjorie was employed as a secretary in Portland for 25 years, before her retirement in 1983. Robert H. Webb and Marjorie were united in marriage in 1943. Marjorie was a beloved wife, loving sister, favorite aunt, dear neighbor, and cherished friend. She was an exceptional lady, special in her own unique way to each person. She had grace, effortless beauty, and simple elegance – always carrying herself with dignity.
Larry Edlen, founder of Island Glass and Glazing on San Juan Island, died peacefully in Redmond, Wash., on Sept. 29. He was 83. Lawrence Monroe Edlen was born in Sabula, Iowa on May 23, 1926. He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 16 and served from 1942-46. He met his wife Pat at a dance while stationed in Seattle. After the war, Larry and Pat settled in Seattle and Larry made his living first as a glazier and later as an electrician. They bought vacation property on Cady Mountain in 1971 and built a cabin there. They moved to the island full-time in 1981 and Larry opened Island Glass and Glazing.
Mary Elizabeth Keith passed away on Sept. 26, 2009, in Bellingham, Wash. She was 64. Mary was born May 5, 1945, in Twin Falls, Idaho to Charles and Thelma Nanz. After graduating from Twin Falls High School, Mary attended Boise Junior College, now known as Boise State University. She married Doren Keith and they had a son, David.
William Troy Nash of Vancouver, Waah., died in an automobile accident on Sept. 25, 2009. Troy was born July 24, 1987 in Mount Vernon, Wash., and lived his early life in Friday Harbor. His family moved to Vancouver, Wash., where Troy attended his later school years and earned his GED diploma. His earlier years were involved in sports and motorcycle racing, and he remained a sports enthusiast.
Carroll Lloyd Weeks of Lopez Island passed away quietly on Sept. 3, 2009 at Life Care Center in Mount Vernon, Wash. He was 79. He was born on June 9, 1930 on Lopez Island, the son of Lloyd and Wilma (Powers) Weeks.
Roy F. Cope died peacefully on Sept. 15, 2009. Roy and Nancy, as best friends, enjoyed marriage, family, boat life, literature, travel, music, dance, hiking/camping and volunteering. Many friendships on San Juan Island and Horizon House are treasured as well as those in recreation, teaching and square dance.
Edward James Dougherty III passed away Sept. 10, 2009 after a long battle with cancer. He was 66. He was the son of Edward Dougherty II and Alfreda Rosler. He was the great-grandson of Christopher Rosler, who came to the island with Capt. George Pickett’s Company D during the joint military occupation of San Juan Island; and Anna Pike, a Tsimshian from Metlakatla, Alaska.
Our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Wilma, left her battered body in order to enter a place of peace and health. She had a mercifully brief struggle with cancer and conceded only 30 hours short of celebrating her 90th birthday.
Patricia Josephine (McHugh) Branstetter died at home in Friday Harbor on Sept. 8, 2009, surrounded by the love of her four children. She was 88.
A memorial will be held in Islands Convalescent Center in Friday Harbor on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2-4 p.m.; and in Seattle at the Nordic Heritage Museum in Ballard on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2-6 p.m.
