Through the lens: San Juan Marathon 2014 | Slideshow

The "50-and-over-crowd" made what is perhaps its strongest showing to date at the San Juan Island Marathon, proving age is irrelevant—or at least not a handicap—in a grueling, long distance run on the road.

Black balloons for these two?

Not a chance.

Fifty-year-old Gerard Reski crossed the finish line in three hours, 29 minutes and 51 seconds to take first-place in the 2014 San Juan Island Marathon, June 22 at Lakedale Resort, first-time host of the annual event.

Fellow 50-year-old Michael Brisbois, trailing Reski by just two minutes and 37 seconds, completed the 26.2-mile course in 3:17:13 to snag second. Friday Harbor’s Jared Dallman, 34, finished sixth overall, 3:29:35, and first among local runners.

A total 60 competitors tested their training and their race-day mettle in this year’s marathon, which, after 11 years as the island’s premier long-distance endurance event, featured an almost entirely new course in 2014.

Meanwhile, 56-year-old Cyndi Kelly proved swiftest of the 47 women competing in the 13.1-mile half marathon, completing the course in 1:38:19 to finish first among the women’s field and seventh overall. Friday Harbor’s Robyn Roberts, 19, crossed the finish line 38 seconds behind Kelly to take second among the half-marathon female field.

This year’s marathon and its companion, the half and a 10K run, drew a total of 214 competitors, 15 fewer than 2013’s 229, a 20-percent increase than the previous year.

In the half-marathon, David Yecha, 23, bested the entire field to finish first overall, in 1:23:52, and 18-year-old Aiden Anderson of Friday Harbor, Class of 2014, finished third, at 1:27:34.

Margo Cramer, 24 (3:21:12), and fellow 24-year-old Chelsea Ward-Waller (3:24:36) finished first and second, respectively, in the full marathon. San Juan Island Irine Bell, the first local female runner across the finish line, completed the 26.2-mile course in 4:13:29, 25th overall.

The day before, San Juan Island Brian Goodremont successfully defended his 2013 title by finishing first in the Three Lakes Triathlon, hosted June 21 by Lakedale Resort as well.
