The tally is in… islanders love the ‘Harry Potter’ series

The winners of the best loved books at 2011 San Juan County Fair

The tally is in for the best loved books at 2011 San Juan County Fair. J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” series won the blue ribbon.

Suzanne Collins’ “The Hunger Games” trilogy won second place.

Rick Riordan came in third with his “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series.

More than 1,213 unique votes were cast for 828 different titles at the library booth during the four days of the fair. Multiple votes were cast for 146 titles, while some just voted for authors like Jane Austin or Edward Abbey.

The complete list of titles and authors are at www.sjlib.org.

For most popular author of a single book, Harper Lee’s classic “To Kill a Mockingbird” won again this year. Kathryn Stockett, author of the book of the same title as the new hit movie, “The Help,” tied for popularity, followed in the votes for the “Bible.”

Writers like Dr. Seuss and J.R.R. Tolkien of “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy still raked in the votes.

One thing that’s clear is that the “Twilight” series lost the cachet it had several years ago.
