You know the motto associated with U.S. postal carriers: “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”

But freezing temperatures and icy roads apparently can slow them.

Several neighborhoods on San Juan Island didn’t get mail Tuesday and Wednesday because of poor road conditions. Postmaster Dan Fleming said earlier today he expected all mail customers to get mail today.

Snow and ice kept postal vehicles from delivering on High Haro, Ivan, Terrace and Wold roads.

Fleming said he comes from the “other side of the mountains,” where snowfall is more abundant but municipalities have better equipment for keeping roads traversable.

About that slogan … “We do the best we can. We make every effort,” Fleming said.
