San Juan Island public school students will get to sleep in a little late today; schools will start 90 minutes later and buses will use snow routes for the fifth consecutive day.

Freezing temperatures that arrived last weekend continue here today and will continue through this weekend. The Big Chill forced the cancellation of several public meetings and community events, kept mail from being delivered on some routes, and public officials were advising islanders to not travel unless absolutely necessary.

At 6 a.m. today, it was 19 degrees at Friday Harbor Airport, with an 8 degree windchill and wind 9 mph from the north.

The National Weather Service was forecasting a breezy day, mostly sunny, with highs in the 20s and a north wind 15 to 25 mph. Tonight, temperatures are expected to dip to 15 to 25 degrees with a northeast wind 10 to 15 mph.

Expect much of the same Saturday, with snow likely overnight and on Sunday. Stronger winds are likely Sunday, with gusts to around 50 mph and rain in the evening.

Monday through Wednesday, it will be windy with a chance of showers and highs in the upper 30s, lows around 30.

Christmas Day, it will be breezy and cloudy, with a chance of showers and highs in the lower 40s.
