Savor the San Juans, a month-long medley of food, farms and films, invites visitors to taste the culture of Lopez, Orcas and San Juan Island this fall.

Five days of fun farm tours are a great way to spend a fall getaway during harvest season. More farmers than ever are offering visitors the chance to open the barn door to see behind the scenes at some of the islands’ most beautiful farms, creameries, wineries, flower gardens, shellfish farms and more during the month of October. And, lodgings and restaurants are offering enticing fall specials. Visit the website to check out all the businesses involved at www.visitsanjuans.com/savor.

This year, Savor the San Juans is nine years old, and has grown to encompass two film festivals, art exhibits, a farm parade, farmers’ markets, a vineyard harvest festival and more. Taste island grown foods and wine, beer, cider and spirits during a selection of farm-to-table dinners by local chefs.

Special all-day Farm Tours on Orcas, Lopez and San Juan Islands will feature sheep shearing and sheepdog demonstrations, a fermentation workshop, a cider pressing and great snacks such as fruit and cheese sampling and goodies from an outdoor wood-fired baking house.

On San Juan Island, you can ride from farm to farm in the restored historic Friday Harbor Jolly Trolley. In late October, get spooked at a special haunted house at the San Juan Island Fairgrounds.
