Medical complications blamed in death of Orcas driver

James E. Ekberg, 71, was eastbound on Crescent Beach Road at about 8:40 p.m when his vehicle drifted off the roadway and rolled into a ditch. Authorities believe he suffered some type of a fatal medical attack while behind the wheel.

An Orcas Island man died of apparent medical complications while behind the wheel of a vehicle traveling eastbound on Crescent Beach Road shortly before 9 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 10.

James E. Ekberg, of Eastsound, was found dead at the scene of a single-car crash on the outskirts of Eastsound at about 8:40 p.m. The 71-year-old, pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, was the sole occupant of the vehicle and no other vehicles were involved in the collision, according to the San Juan County Sheriff’s Department.

Based on preliminary reports, Ekberg suffered a fatal medical event while driving on Crescent Beach Road, and his vehicle drifted off the roadway and rolled to a stop in a ditch along the road side. Emergency responders found no sign of traumatic injury as a result of the crash, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

The incident remains under investigation, according to authorities.
