Kitsap fills in while Hyak is out of service

Ferry service in the San Juan Islands has hit another speed bump as the Hyak will be pulled for up to two weeks while Washington State Ferries replaces its generator.

Beginning Thursday, Aug. 31, the Kitsap to move from Mukilteo/Clinton to replace Hyak on Anacortes/San Juan Islands. This will result in a capacity decrease of 20 vehicles.

Scheduled to be out just for the day on Wednesday, Aug. 30 for “routine maintenance,” WSF crews discovered that the service generator which provides electricity to the ferry has a problem. Earlier this month, crews on the Hyak discovered a coolant system failure after noticing oil and water mixing in one of its engine generators. After conducting an investigation early morning on Aug. 30, WSF maintenance crews determined that it would take longer to repair the generator than to replace it.
