The starting line is due south of Deer Harbor Marina.

The destination? Yellow Island, of course.

All sailboats made of wood are welcome to compete, as the Wooden Boat Society of the San Juan Islands hosts its third annual Yellow Island Wooden Boat Race, Saturday, May 17.

Entry fee is $15 (with signed liability waiver) and will be collected at a skipper’s meeting, 9 a.m. at Deer Harbor Boatworks, prior to the race. The entry fee includes one continental breakfast, also available for $8 for crew and spectators. (Boats built of other materials are welcome to race but will receive no prizes.)

The race gets under way in late morning and has a four-hour time limit. Marks of the course consist of various islands and rocks, and a race buoy near the marina.

Colorful burgees will be awarded to first, second and third place finishers at an award ceremony the evening of the race. Discounted moorage is available for Friday and Saturday nights.

Proceeds benefit the SJIs Wooden Boat Society, founded in 2002, whose mission is to promote restoration, use and enjoyment of wooden boats.
