Winter 2024 Family Art Days at SJIM starts January 20

Submitted by the San Juan Islands Museum of Art

The Family Art Days workshops at the San Juan Islands Museum of Art are free and open to children (five and older) accompanied by at least one adult (family member, friend or mentor). These workshops offer the opportunity for both the children and the adults with them to participate in hands-on art activities led by artists in the stimulating environment of the museum.

The first session of SJIMA’s Family Art Days winter series takes place on Saturday, Jan. 20, noon to 2 p.m., upstairs at the museum. Intuitive Collage will be presented by Alice Hibberd, a teaching artist who has offered many workshops at SJIMA, as well as providing art education in the public schools and privately on San Juan Island. On the following Saturdays through Feb. 24, workshops will be led by artists exhibiting in the current Artists’ Registry show at SJIMA and will include brief visits to view their works on display. Scheduled for Jan. 27 is Landscapes in Watercolor by Rachel Dietzman, who has devoted herself more to her artistic pursuits after retiring from her job as San Juan County engineer. On Feb. 3, Katey Rissi, printmaker and textile artist who teaches classes at Alchemy Arts, will lead her workshop, Natural Dye Monoprints. Following on Feb. 10 is Francie Hansen’s Amazing Assemblages. Well-known for the Trashion Fashion shows at the county fair, Hansen finds treasures in what other people discard. On Feb.17, Lauryl Gaumer and Derek Castro, whose studio is Friday Harbor Fabrication (for custom metalwork), will team teach their workshop Sketching Something Sculpturally. The final workshop of this series, My Bird, will be presented on Feb. 24 by Nadia Larson, who has an extensive background both as a watercolor artist and as a high school art teacher.
