Wildflower Festival on May 7 on American Camp parade ground

San Juan Island National Historical Park hosts its first Wildflower Festival, May 7,  10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the American Camp parade ground.

The festival features representatives of nature conservation organizations including Friday Harbor Laboratories and the Native Plant Society.

Artist Elizabeth Chadwick will teach botanical art techniques. Nancy Spaulding and Ann Walbert will show their work.

Various musicians will perform throughout the day.

Children can build birdhouses, weave baskets and create their  own prairie ecosystem and junior ranger booklets with patches and badges.

In addition to park rangers, local botanists Fiona Norris, Louisa Nishitani and Kevin Sloan and naturalist Susan Vernon will find and discuss wildflowers from South Beach to the parade ground, Jakle’s Lagoon and Mt. Finlayson trail network.

The Native Plant Society will provide walks every 30 minutes.
