San Juan Island EMS is offering Wilderness First Responder Training, Feb. 10 – 19 at Camp Orkila on Orcas Island. This training is the perfect course for anyone working in a position of leadership in an outdoor setting or for individuals who want a high level of wilderness medical training for extended personal backcountry trips or expeditions. It is also invaluable training for any first responders.

The WFR is a 10-day course that is a comprehensive and in-depth look at the standards and skills of dealing with: Response and Assessment, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Environmental Emergencies and Survival Skills, Soft Tissue Injuries, and Medical Emergencies. Although these appear to be the same basic topics covered in our two-day Wilderness First Aid course, they are covered far more extensively, and there is much more hands-on practice. Additional topics, such as CPR, are also included.

Class runs from breakfast at 8 a.m. on Monday, Febr. 10, to noon on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Participants are welcome to arrive Sunday evening, Feb. 9 after 5 p.m. The cost for the course is $600, paid directly to San Juan Island EMS. The course fee includes CPR. Accommodations are available at Camp Orkila. The cost is $500 which includes all meals – three meals a day, ending after lunch on Feb. 19 – and lodging – includes the night of Feb. 9. The cost for lunches only is $110.
