Tree Lighting Festival kicks off Winterfest

Despite the freezing temperature and icy air against their cheeks, the community gathered around Memorial Park caroling and watching the official tree lighting.

This year, the flag pole was lit to keep the festive spirit due to the health of elms in the park. Becki Day, Executive Director of the San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce welcomed the crowd. She introduced Mayor Ray Jackson, who inspired the audience with words of unity, and the Elementary School Treblemakers sang a few Christmas songs before infamous island singer Kira Sable joined in.

Children swarmed Santa once he arrived, and attendees headed up to Brickworks to continue the celebration.
