Submitted by Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor

Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor awarded $6,500 in scholarships to three high school girls at the Friday Harbor High School graduation on June 9. The scholarships were presented by Mary Campanella, club president.

A $2,500 scholarship was for the STEM award. This award recognizes a young woman who will pursue a course of study in science, technology, engineering or math in college. This year’s recipient is Kiana Woods, who will attend Whitworth University in Spokane. She will study biology with an emphasis in pre-optometry.

Other Soroptimist scholarships are given to women who have been successful in high school, have made significant contributions to their community and will be furthering their education in college.

A $2,000 scholarship went to Emma Schroeder, who will attend the University of Victoria and study child and youth care with a goal of working in pediatric nursing and community health. A second recipient of the $2,000 scholarship is Tenley Nelson who will study business commerce with a specialization in entrepreneurship at the University of Victoria.

Thank you to all members of our community who support our various fundraisers and make these scholarships possible. Congratulations to all these outstanding young women.
