San Juan history events

Every May, local history enthusiasts, county-wide, create community events to celebrate San Juan County history. This month-long celebration is called History Lives Here.

The History of the Argyle Wagon Road, ongoing, at Argyle Avenue and Spring Street. Visit the newest historical installation illustrating the history of Argyle Avenue, sponsored by the Town of Friday Harbor. The location was made possible by Wells Fargo Bank.

Coast Salish Wooly Dog history talk, 5:30 p.m., Sunday, May 7, at Brickworks. Join ecologist and historian Russel Barsh and botanist and spinner Madrona Murphy for a slideshow presentation and weaving demonstration celebrating the Coast Salish “wooly dog” and the first peoples of the islands. Sponsored by Kwiaht.

Researching history, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sat., May 20 at the San Juan Island Library. Local Writing Our History Project writers will discuss the tricks-of-the-trade they use for finding information about local history topics, including genealogy websites and local, regional, state and national archives, maps and photographs.
