A seventh-generation islander, Ryder is welcomed by sisters Adele, Betty, Emma and Eve Hulse. His grandparents are Denny Martel, Kristy Wade and Patricia Rishel, all of Friday Harbor. His great-grandparents are Edith Martel and the late Ed Martel of Friday Harbor, John Wade of Bellingham and Cora Dickey of Blaine.
